To begin, let's talk a little about the programs we use to make the contents of this blog.
Inkscape is an open-source vector graphics editor similar to AdobeIllustrator, Corel Draw, Freehand, or Xara X. What sets apart Inkscape is excellant use of Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG), an open XML-basedW3C standard, to the native format.

The "GNU Image Manipulation Program" (originally the General Image Manipulation Program) sired by Spencer Kimball & Peter Mattis.
In their own words, "GIMP is our answer to the current Lack of free (or at least reasonably priced) image manipulation software for GNU / Linux andUNIX in general."
It is a raster editor, That Which means it performs operations directly on thepixels That make up the image, and not a vector editor. Other (proprietary)raster editors include Adobe Photoshop, Jasc Paintshop Pro and thehumble Microsoft Paint.

These two programs are complementary to each other and can be used for various types of creating and editing images. Very versatile and complete, are excellent alternatives to paid programs like Photoshop, Illustrator. The interaction with the user is very simple and excellent for beginners.
