A simple tutorial that demonstrates the basics of how to make an animation (gif) using Inkscape and Gimp.

First step is to draw the object you want to represent in inkscape. Duplicate the object and modify it at will, arranging the objects as a timeline, this will facilitate the use of the image in Gimp.
In Gimp, open the image of the "timeline" and divide it by using guides. Select from the menu Image -> Transform -> Guillotine. This will make your timeline split into multiple images. Record all the resulting images, this will be the frames of your animation. Open a new image and make sure it has the size to be adequate for previous frames. Menu -> File -> Open as Layers, and select all frames. Align all frames so that the object have a more linear and realistic movement. Check if any of the frames contain spaces with transparency.
The last step is to optimize all layers to gif, Menu -> Filters -> Animation -> Optimize (for GIF). This function will create a new image is optimized to preview the image go to, Menu -> Filters -> Animation -> Playback. Save with the extension GIF, and select "save as animation" in the export menu.
